Sexually transmitted infections (STI's) within the gay community are on the increase. It's not only HIV, but other diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, giardiasis, and genital herpes that are increasing.

Scientists and medical experts believe the reason for this is that the post AIDS generation is largely becoming complacent about safer sex and that the gay community are no longer making the connection that HIV=AIDS=DEATH. Consequently other STI's in addition to HIV are on the increase. The ever evolving, increasingly effective HIV therapies now available have created a perception where sex is no longer associated with mortality.

Whilst it is true that new combination therapies have led to an increased lifespan and greater quality of life for those infected with HIV, it cannot be stressed strongly enough that following a strict regime of taking up to 27 tablets a day, some with drastic side effects, is no substitute for a cure.

It should not be forgotten that if you are exposed to an STI such as syphilis or gonorrhea you are more at risk of becoming infected with HIV if you continue to enjoy multiple partners, as the STI may cause open sores on the genitals or in the mouth or broken skin, exposing your body to another route of transmission.

It is important to recognise the symptoms of STI's and get them treated early so as to stay healthy and further reduce the risk of HIV transmission. This site contains useful information to help you have fun, safely.
